Florida police said Wednesday that a 13-year-old boy shot and killed his 6-year-old brother and wounded his 16-year-old brother before turning the gun on himself after a heated argument over food.
The shooting occurred shortly after 6 p.m. in the suburban community of Hudson located in Pasco County, just an hour north of Tampa.
The teen used a handgun during the shooting in the family’s mobile home, Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said during a news conference Wednesday.
The three brothers were home alone eating dinner when an argument over food.
“This is a horrific scene,” Nocco said. “This is a nightmare.”
Details such as the victims’ names and how the teen obtained the gun weren’t immediately available.
The three boys lived at home with their mother and 18-year-old brother. Neither was home during the time of the shooting.
The wounded 16-year-old alerted the authorities, Nocco said. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening and the teen is being treated at an area hospital, a news release said.
The shootings happened about two miles away from the location of another family slaying. In August, three members of a family and a fourth man were discovered dead. The ex-boyfriend of one of the victims is awaiting trial in those deaths.
